Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

Debate: “Adequate Support of Veterans”

In this Activity, students will participate in a debate that examines the role of the US government in supporting veterans.

The novel touches upon The Brutality of War during battle as well as its long-lasting effects on veterans. In this Activity, you will participate in a debate in which you argue either for or against the following point: The US government provides adequate support services for military veterans. In your assigned team, prepare the following:

  • An opening statement with a cohesive argument
  • A series of main points to address in the debate
  • Specific evidence from the text or available resources
  • Anticipated rebuttals, questions, or comments
  • A closing statement addressing the overall significance of the topic

After the debate, reflect on and discuss both sides of the argument. Which team was most prepared for the debate? Which tactics or points were most persuasive and why?

Teaching Suggestion: This Activity invites students to consider the US government’s support of veterans in the context of argumentation and oral presentation. Large classes may benefit from smaller teams of 5-6 classmates, while small classes may benefit from two large teams: one for the statement, and one against it.
